Kevin Garnett

Kevin Maurice Garnett, known as KG, is a former American basketball player who had a long and successful career in the National Basketball Association. He played for 21 seasons and is remembered for his strong defense, versatility, and passion for the game. Garnett was one of only five NBA players to win both the NBA Most Valuable Player Award and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.

In high school, Garnett was already a top player and was chosen early in the 1995 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He became the first player in 20 years to go straight from high school to the NBA. Garnett quickly became an important player for the Timberwolves, helping them reach the playoffs many times and even leading them to the Western Conference Finals in 2004, where he won the NBA MVP Award.

Garnett later played for the Boston Celtics, helping them reach the 2008 NBA Finals. He also had stints with the Brooklyn Nets before returning to Minnesota and retiring in 2016. During his career, he was chosen for 15 All-Star Games and earned many other awards. In 2020, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Besides basketball, Garnett also appeared in the movie Uncut Gems.

Early life

Kevin Garnett was born on May 19, 1976, in Greenville, South Carolina. He grew up with his mother and stepfather and has two sisters. Garnett loved basketball and started playing in high school. He first went to Mauldin High School in Mauldin, South Carolina, but later moved to Farragut Career Academy in Chicago for his final year. There, he helped his team achieve a great record and was named the best high school player in the country by USA Today. He also won an award for the best player in Illinois.

Garnett decided to join the NBA right after high school instead of playing college basketball. He was able to do this because he improved his test scores. Many people thought he might play for University of Maryland or University of Michigan, but he chose the NBA and was picked in the 1995 NBA draft.

Professional career

Minnesota Timberwolves (1995–2007)

Kevin Garnett was picked fifth overall in the 1995 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was the first player drafted right out of high school since 1975. Garnett started his career slowly but became a key player for the team. He helped the Timberwolves reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history during the 1996–97 season.

Garnett became one of the league's best players, earning many awards and All-Star selections. He led the Timberwolves to their first-ever playoff wins and almost brought them to the NBA Finals. However, injuries and changes on the team made it difficult for them to go further. Garnett was very important to the team and worked hard every season.

Boston Celtics (2007–2013)

In 2007, Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics, where he joined Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, forming "The Big Three." Together, they won the NBA Championship in 2008. Garnett also won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award that same year. He continued to play well for the Celtics, making several All-Star Games, but the team sometimes struggled to reach the Finals again.

Brooklyn Nets (2013–2015)

Garnett was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013. He helped lead the team with his experience and passion, but they couldn't go far in the playoffs. Garnett's playing time decreased, and he recorded some of his lowest career averages during this time.

Return to Minnesota (2015–2016)

Garnett returned to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2015. He became the fifth player in NBA history to play over 50,000 minutes and passed several all-time records in points and rebounds. However, knee injuries limited his playing time. He retired in 2016 after 21 seasons in the NBA.

National team career

Kevin Garnett played for the United States national team and won a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. During the tournament, he scored about 11 points, grabbed almost 9 rebounds, and made 2 assists each game.

Post-playing career

After finishing his basketball career, Kevin Garnett started new jobs. In October 2016, he joined the team on TNT’s Inside the NBA. The next month, he began hosting his own part called Area 21. In January 2017, he helped the Los Angeles Clippers as a guide. He also gave advice to the Milwaukee Bucks during the 2016–17 season.

On December 17, 2025, Garnett came back to the Timberwolves as a special helper. Before this, he had kept his distance from the team because of a long problem with the owner, Glen Taylor. But after the Timberwolves were sold to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, Garnett returned. The team promised to retire his number 21 jersey within two seasons.

Uncut Gems

Garnett acted as a version of himself in the 2019 crime thriller Uncut Gems, directed by the Safdie brothers. The movie happens in 2012 and is about the Eastern Conference Semi-finals series between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. While he was playing for Philadelphia, Garnett goes to a jewelry store in New York City owned by Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) in the Diamond District. Garnett likes a special gem called an Ethiopian opal that Ratner shows him. The story follows Garnett’s games and his link to the gem, along with Ratner’s busy life.

Critics liked Garnett’s acting. The Safdie brothers chose him after changing the script for different players. Before Garnett, they asked Amar'e Stoudemire, who didn’t want to cut his hair for the old-time story; and Kobe Bryant, who wanted to direct instead of act. Joel Embiid couldn’t film because of his busy games. Garnett was one of the first players they asked who wasn’t playing anymore. He said filming felt important but strange.

He later signed a deal with Village Roadshow Pictures.

Personal life

Kevin Garnett wore special clothing with the letters "OBF," meaning "Official Block Family." This name came from his close group of friends from his hometown in Mauldin, South Carolina. He invited some of his OBF friends to live with him and even let them ride on team flights.

Garnett married his girlfriend Brandi Padilla in California in 2004, but they later separated and she asked to take care of their two daughters. He is related to other basketball players, including his half-brother Louis McCullough and his cousin, former Los Angeles Laker Shammond Williams.

Garnett had many nicknames like "The Big Ticket" and "KG." He liked to prepare for games by tapping his head on a padded post. Though listed as very tall by the NBA, Garnett was even taller than that in some measurements. He also became part owner of an Italian soccer team, A.S. Roma. In 2021, he wrote a book about his life called KG: A to Z.

Kevin Garnett has many impressive achievements and records in basketball. He is the only player to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. He is also the only player to reach 25,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 5,000 assists, 1,500 steals, and 1,500 blocks in his career. Garnett won the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in 2004 and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2008. He was also an Olympic gold medalist in 2000 and an NBA champion in 2008.

Garnett was selected as an NBA All-Star 15 times and was the NBA All-Star Game MVP in 2003. He made the All-NBA Team nine times and the All-Defensive Team twelve times. He was also named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
