Lincoln family

The Lincoln family is an American family that came from England. Some of its most famous members include Levi Lincoln Sr., who was the fourth United States Attorney General, and two governors: Levi Lincoln Jr. of Massachusetts and Enoch Lincoln of Maine. The family is best known for Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States.

Abraham Lincoln is remembered for leading the country during a very difficult time and for working to end slavery. After his death, there were ten known descendants from his family. The last known direct descendant, Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith, passed away in 1985 without any children, and it is believed that this branch of the Lincoln family has since ended.

Roots in England

Samuel Lincoln’s father, Edward Lincoln, was born around 1575 in Hingham, Norfolk, England. Edward had many family members, and after his father Richard passed away, there were some disagreements about what should happen to the family’s land and money.

Edward’s children, including Samuel Lincoln, decided to travel to a new place called the New World because of these disagreements.

History in America

The Lincoln family came to America in 1637 when Samuel Lincoln sailed to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He is considered the family's first member in the United States.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was born in Kentucky and later became a lawyer and politician. He had four children, but only one son lived past age 18. That son, Robert, had three children. The family's line continued through them and other distant relatives, including some famous people today.
