By geographical region
Brooklyn, a part of New York City, has many neighborhoods grouped by their location. Central Brooklyn includes areas like Crown Heights, which has a part called Weeksville, and Flatbush with sections such as Ditmas Park and East Flatbush. Eastern Brooklyn has neighborhoods like Brownsville and Canarsie.
Northern Brooklyn features Bedford–Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and Williamsburg. Northwestern Brooklyn includes Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, and Fort Greene. By historical town
Brooklyn started as six towns with clear borders. These towns later joined together to become the unified City of Brooklyn. The towns, going clockwise from the north, were Bushwick, Brooklyn, Flatlands, Gravesend, New Utrecht, and Flatbush in the middle. Today, neighborhoods with these names are found in the middle of each original town.
After a vote in 1894, Brooklyn became a part of New York City in 1898.
