Texas is home to many colleges and universities, with 234 of them listed under special rules for organizing schools. These schools include 34 research universities, 29 schools for advanced studies, 92 schools focused mainly on basic courses, and 71 schools with special areas of study. Some of these schools are private, meaning they are not supported by state money, and some are public, meaning they receive money from the state.
The oldest school in Texas is Southwestern University, founded in 1840. The largest school is Texas A&M University, with over 77,000 students, while the smallest is Southwest College for the Deaf, with just 48 students in 2023. Texas is also known for some of its top schools, like the University of Texas at Austin, Rice University, and Texas A&M University, which are known around the world.
Texas has special types of schools too. Texas A&M University and Prairie View A&M University are land-grant universities, which means they get special support to help with farming and other practical studies. There are also schools linked to certain religions, like six Catholic schools and four Southern Baptist schools. The state also has many schools for studying law and medicine, with ten law schools approved by a special group called the American Bar Association and sixteen medical schools. Most of these schools are approved by a group called the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Closed schools were for different kinds of learning, like regular school subjects, special training, or religious studies. Some closed after fires, others after money problems, and some just stopped working for other reasons.
