Melbourne Park is a famous sporting venue located in the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Since 1988, it has been the home of the Australian Open tennis tournament, which is played every January. The park has several special venues for the tennis matches.

The largest venue is Rod Laver Arena, which can hold 15,000 people. There is also John Cain Arena for 10,500 people and Margaret Court Arena for 7,500 people. These three venues have special roofs that can be closed to let events happen inside or outside. There are also other places to watch matches, like Show Court 3, 1573 Arena, and the new Kia Arena, which can hold 5,000 people and opened in 2022. In total, there are 35 outdoor Greenset tennis courts at Melbourne Park.

Melbourne Park is owned by the Victorian Government and managed by the Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust, which also takes care of the nearby Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. The Yarra Park area of the Sports and Entertainment Precinct is managed separately.

History

Melbourne Park used to be called Flinders Park until 1996. The leader of the state at that time decided to change the name to Melbourne Park to help promote the city of Melbourne during big events. Some people disagreed with this change, but over time, most people in Melbourne accepted the new name.

The park was built in 1988 next to the Jolimont Yard to host the Australian Open tennis tournament. The old venue was too small for all the players and fans, so they built a new one. Many people loved the new park when it opened, saying it had some of the best facilities of all the major tennis tournaments. Later, in 1996, they added more courts and spaces to the park.

Events

Melbourne Park is famous for tennis, but it also hosts many other sports and music events. Because it is the largest venue in the city (except for the Docklands Stadium and the Melbourne Cricket Ground), many popular international musicians perform there, especially at the Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena.

Besides the Australian Open tennis tournament, which draws over 800,000 fans, Melbourne Park is used for other sports too. For example, netball teams like the Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood Magpies play at John Cain Arena and Margaret Court Arena. The Melbourne United basketball team also has home games at John Cain Arena. In the past, the park has featured ice skating, track cycling, international swimming, and motorsport events.

In 2025, the Australian Open introduced pickleball for the first time. From January 24 to 26, the AO Pickleball Slam took place on Court 3, with prize money for top Australian pickleball players.

Arenas and facilities

Melbourne Park is the only Grand Slam tennis venue with three courts that have retractable roofs. This helps players continue their matches during rain or extreme heat. The courts used to have a surface called Plexicushion from 2008 to 2019.

Show Courts

There are two Show Courts at Melbourne Park, Show Court 2 and Court 3, each with around 3,000 seats. Like all the tennis courts at Melbourne Park, these courts are used for tennis all year and are open to the public. There are also many other outdoor courts, mostly on the west side of the park.

Centrepiece

Opened in September 2021, Centrepiece is a new building near Garden Square and Rod Laver Arena. It can host big events and has rooms for media and television broadcasts.

Redevelopment (2010–2022)

The Melbourne Park Redevelopment was a big project that happened between 2010 and 2022. It had three main stages. In the first stage, they built a new area called the Eastern Plaza, which has a special tennis training center and a bridge connecting to nearby stadiums. They also made improvements to the Margaret Court Arena, adding more seats and a roof that can close.

The second stage started in 2015 and focused on updating the Rod Laver Arena. They improved its outside look and added new places for players and fans to enjoy. A new footbridge called Tanderrum Bridge was built, and a building for Tennis Australia and other offices was completed.

The final stage began in 2019 and included building a new arena that can hold 5,000 people and a big center called Centrepiece. This center has spaces for events, meetings, and media. Other improvements included new public spaces and extra tennis courts. All the work was finished in December 2021, just before the 2022 Australian Open. In total, over $972 million was spent on upgrading Melbourne Park.

Transport and access

Melbourne Park is next to the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Yarra Park. There are walking bridges that connect the two places over the train tracks. The park is a short walk from Richmond and Jolimont train stations. You can also take a tram, especially route 70, to get there quickly, or walk ten minutes from the city centre.
