Overview
The National Naval Aviation Museum is a place where you can learn about the history of flying in the ocean air, known as naval aviation. It shows off more than 150 old airplanes and spacecraft, including special planes used by famous pilots and presidents. These amazing airplanes are shown inside a huge building and also outside on a big field.
The museum works with the Navy to take care of many other old airplanes that are shown in other places. It also has a big screen for movies, fun airplane games to try out, and a shop where you can buy souvenirs. There is even a special library with lots of books and pictures about the history of flying. Nearby, there is a place called the National Flight Academy where students can learn about science and math by trying out flight games.
History
The museum was created on December 14, 1962, in a small building from World War II. It opened to the public in June 1963.
Construction on the current building started in November 1972. Part of it opened in November 1974 and was fully dedicated in April 1975. More parts were finished in 1980 and 1990. In May 1989, it was renamed the National Museum of Naval Aviation.
In September 2004, a big storm named Hurricane Ivan damaged the museum and some planes outside.
In 2019, the museum closed after a sad event at the air station where people were hurt. It also closed for several months in 2020 due to health guidelines.
In May 2023, the museum announced it would reopen to visitors on May 17, 2023. People needed to show a special card to visit.
In October 2024, the museum added a new display about how the Navy helps keep pilots healthy.
