Neumarkt, also known as Egna, is a charming village and municipality in the beautiful region of South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is located about 25 kilometres, or 16 miles, south of the city of Bolzano. Neumarkt is special because it is one of the most beautiful villages in all of Italy, earning a place among I Borghi più belli d'Italia. The village has a rich history and offers visitors a glimpse into traditional alpine life. People can enjoy exploring its narrow streets, historic buildings, and enjoying the peaceful countryside around it.

Geography

Neumarkt is a village in South Tyrol, Italy, with a population of 5,001 as of 2010 and covers an area of 23 square kilometres. It sits at an elevation of 214 metres above sea level on the left side of the Adige river.

The village is part of the Überetsch-Unterland district and is known for its old town, arcades, and important buildings like the parish church and the Local Culture Museum. Neumarkt shares borders with several nearby municipalities, including Kaltern, Kurtatsch, and Salorno, among others.

The area includes smaller villages and hamlets known as frazioni, such as Laag, Mazon, St. Florian, and Vill.

History

The village's symbol is split into two parts. On one side, there is a silver crescent moon on a red background. On the other side, there is a red cross with shorter arms on a silver background. This symbol was given to the village, known back then as Newnmarkt, in a document from the year 1395. The emblem was officially granted in 1967.

Society

In Neumarkt, people mainly speak two languages. Most of them, about 61%, speak German as their first language. Around 39% speak Italian, and a very small group, about 0.4%, speak Ladin.

The town has produced famous people, like Lilli Gruber, a well-known journalist and former politician who was born there in 1957. Neumarkt is also home to an ice hockey team called HC Neumarkt-Egna.
