The New Orleans–Metairie–Slidell combined statistical area is a group of nine parishes in southeastern Louisiana and one county in Mississippi. It includes the New Orleans metropolitan statistical area, Slidell–Mandeville–Covington, LA MSA, Picayune micropolitan statistical area, and the Bogalusa μSA. According to the 2020 census, the area had a population of 1,373,453 people.

In 2023, the Office of Management and Budget made some changes to how these areas are grouped, moving St. Tammany Parish from the New Orleans–Metairie area to create the Slidell–Mandeville–Covington area.

This region faced a big challenge when Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, causing widespread damage and changes to the area.

Parishes and counties

The New Orleans–Metairie–Slidell combined statistical area includes nine parishes in southeastern Louisiana and one county in Mississippi.

The parishes in Louisiana are Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, and Washington. The county in Mississippi is Pearl River.

Communities

The New Orleans–Metairie–Slidell area includes several communities of different sizes.

The largest cities are New Orleans and Metairie. Kenner is another major city in the area.

Smaller towns and places with fewer than 10,000 people are also part of this region.

Demographics

As of the census in 2000, about 1.4 million people lived in the area, with 515,054 households and 347,173 families. Most people, around 57.7%, were White, and 37.2% were African American. Smaller groups included Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, and people from other races or two or more races. About 4.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

The average income for a household was $37,053, and for a family, it was $42,860. Men earned about $35,659 on average, while women earned about $23,150. The average income for each person was $17,474.
