A tall, modern skyscraper known as One World Trade Center, part of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in New York City.

One World Trade Center, also known as One WTC and the Freedom Tower, is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It is the tallest building in the United States, the tallest in the Western Hemisphere, and the seventh-tallest in the world. It stands on the same spot where the original North Tower of the original World Trade Center once stood, which was destroyed during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Construction began in 2006, and the building opened to the public on November 3, 2014. When the final part of its spire was added in 2013, the tower reached a height of 1,776 feet, a number that honors the year the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. The building has 94 stories, though the top floor is numbered 104.

The new World Trade Center complex includes several buildings, a memorial and museum, and a transportation hub. It was built to honor those lost and to create a new, strong center for business and memory in New York City.

The original World Trade Center was built to help renew Lower Manhattan. Designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, the twin towers each stood over 1,350 feet tall and had open floor plans without columns or walls blocking space. Construction began in 1966, and the first tenants moved in during 1971. At that time, it became the tallest building in the world.

Sadly, on September 11, 2001, the North Tower was struck by a plane. After burning for over an hour, the tower collapsed. This event led to the rebuilding of the World Trade Center complex.

Planning

World Trade Center master plan

Following the destruction of the original World Trade Center, plans were made to rebuild the site. In 2002, a competition was held to decide the new design. Many ideas were shared, and after some changes, a design by architect David Childs was chosen. This design would become known as the Freedom Tower.

Tower design

The new One World Trade Center was designed by the firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The building would be tall and slim, reaching up into the sky. The design changed many times to make sure it was safe and could look beautiful.

Construction began with a ceremony in 2004. Over the next several years, workers built the foundation and then the tower itself. By 2012, it became the tallest building in New York City again. The final height was reached in 2013, and the building opened to the public in November 2014.

Topping-out and completion

By 2012, the tower had grown very tall. In 2013, the final piece was added, making it exactly 1,776 feet tall—a number chosen to honor the year the United States declared its independence. The building was officially named the tallest in the United States.

Opening and early years

One World Trade Center opened in 2014. A big company called Condé Nast moved in, taking up many floors. Over time, more companies joined, and by 2022, the building was almost fully occupied. Even after challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, One World Trade Center remained busy and important to New York City.

Architecture

One World Trade Center, also called the Freedom Tower, is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It is the tallest building in the United States and the seventh-tallest in the world. The tower was designed to look like earlier famous buildings such as the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, while also remembering the original Twin Towers.

The building has a strong, windowless base to keep it safe. Above this base, the shape changes into triangles, forming an octagon in the middle, and ending in a tall mast. Inside, there are offices, a special sky lobby on the 64th floor with seating and games, and an observation deck on the 100th floor that gives visitors a great view of New York City. The tower also uses eco-friendly ideas like recycling rainwater and using energy-saving lights.

Reception

When the building was finished, some people liked it and others did not. One writer said it looked the same from every direction and felt plain. Another said it was strong but had some problems. In later years, others called it a symbol of strength and hope.

The bottom part of the building also caused some discussion. Some thought it looked unusual and did not feel happy about it. There were also debates about whether to rebuild certain parts of the old World Trade Center, like a restaurant that was not rebuilt.

Owners and tenants

One World Trade Center is mostly owned by the PANYNJ. A private real estate company called The Durst Organization helped build the tower and now manages it. Many different companies have offices in the building. One big company, Condé Nast Publications, signed a lease to use a lot of space on many floors. Other companies like Servcorp also have offices there, and some spaces are shared for different small businesses to work together. The building also has a special area called the “China Center” to help connect Chinese and American businesses.

Key figures

Developer

Larry Silverstein of Silverstein Properties was the main developer of One World Trade Center. He signed a long-term lease for the World Trade Center site in 2001 and helped lead the rebuilding after the September 11 attacks. There were some disagreements about insurance money that delayed building the new tower, but work eventually continued.

Key project coordinators

David Childs was the main architect who designed One World Trade Center. Daniel Libeskind first won a competition to help plan the new tower and suggested ideas that influenced the final design, like the tower’s height of 1,776 feet to honor America’s founding year. Douglas and Jody Durst from The Durst Organization helped invest in and change parts of the building’s design.

PANYNJ construction workers

Construction workers at One World Trade Center shared their thoughts in a short film. Some left messages at the site to show hope and strength after the attacks in 2001.
