Oxford Saints

The Oxford Saints American Football Club is a British American football team that plays in the BAFANL, the British American Football Association National League. The team is based in Abingdon and plays its home games at Tilsley Park in Oxfordshire. Their games happen on weekends from April through August.

The club was started in 1983, making it one of the oldest American football teams in the UK. Today, the Oxford Saints have a senior team for players aged 18 and older, as well as five youth teams for younger players. These youth teams include U11 flag, U14 flag, U17 flag, U16 contact, and U19 contact levels.

From May 2016 until 2019, the Oxford Saints also had a women's American football team. The club continues to be a important part of the American football community in the UK, offering opportunities for players of all ages to enjoy the sport.

History

The Oxford Saints American football team was started by Steve Abbott in 1983 as the Oxford Eagles. After a phone-in competition on Radio Oxford, the team became the Oxford Bulldogs. When American football became more popular in Britain, the first league was created, and the Bulldogs joined in 1985.

In 1992, the team changed its name to the Oxford Saints. They moved to a new stadium in Cowley and had many successful seasons, winning championships and reaching the playoffs. Over the years, the team went through many changes in coaches and players but kept growing. In 2016, the team moved its home games to Tilsley Park in Abingdon, giving players and fans better facilities. The team also began training a women's squad that year.
