Gameplay

In this game, you start as a person who turns into one of sixteen different Pokémon from the first three groups of Pokémon. You pick which Pokémon you become by answering questions at the start of the game. You also choose a partner Pokémon who helps you, but it can’t be the same type as your Pokémon.

The game gives you different jobs to do, like helping other Pokémon or carrying things. You can find these jobs on a board, in letters, or through the story. When you finish a job, you get prizes and points that help your team get better.

You go into special places called dungeons to do these jobs. Each dungeon looks different every time you play. Your goal is to finish the job or find the way out by going through all the floors. Along the way, you meet wild Pokémon and have battles. These battles happen one step at a time, and your Pokémon use moves or items to fight.

While you’re in the dungeon, your Pokémon get hungry and need food to keep going. Sometimes, new Pokémon join your team while you’re exploring. If you lose a battle, you switch to another Pokémon on your team until you’ve used all three main ones.

You might also find special shiny Pokémon that are stronger than normal ones.

The story in this game is mostly the same as the older versions, with a few small changes and extra details added. There were also extra stories shared on YouTube before the game came out.

Release

The game was announced during a Pokémon Direct event on January 9, 2020, and it came out for the Nintendo Switch on March 6, 2020. A free demo version was also available on the Nintendo eShop starting the same day, and players could transfer their progress from the demo to the full game.

Reception

The game had mixed reviews from critics. Many thought it was better than the older games because of its nicer pictures and updated gameplay, but some found the dungeons too repetitive and missed the enemy health bars. One reviewer gave it a score of 6 out of 10, calling it a bit boring, while another gave it 8 out of 10.

Sales

When the game first came out, it was the most popular game in Japan during its first week, selling over 138,000 copies. It also did well in the United Kingdom and France. By the end of March 2020, more than 1.26 million copies had been sold around the world. By the end of 2022, the game had sold almost 2 million copies, making it one of the best-selling games for the Nintendo Switch.
