Egypt has a long and interesting history when it comes to its people. Over thousands of years, many different groups have lived in or ruled Egypt, including the Canaanites, the Ancient Libyans, the Assyrians, the Kushites, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, and the Arabs. These groups often came from faraway places such as North Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Even though Egypt was ruled by many outside groups, these changes mostly affected the leaders and rulers, not the everyday people. Some researchers think that over time, people from areas like Syria-Palestine slowly moved into Egypt, especially in the eastern part called the Delta.
Because of its special location, Egypt has always been a meeting point for many cultures. This mix of people has helped shape the country's history and the lives of its people for a very long time.
Neolithic and Predynastic periods

Around 8000 BCE, the Sahara had a wet period. During this time, people lived in parts of the Nile Valley, but there is not much evidence from this early time. By about 6000 BCE, small farming villages appeared in Egypt. Some believe these farmers came from places far away, while others think they were local groups who had always lived there.
Over thousands of years, people from many areas, including the Sahara and nearby regions, moved into the Nile Valley. These groups mixed together and helped create early Egyptian communities. As the climate changed and became drier, more people moved to areas with water, like the Nile River. This movement of different groups helped shape the early culture and way of life in Egypt.
Archaeological data and sources for population origin
Ancient Egypt was located in the far northeast of Africa, right where Africa meets the Middle East. This special spot helped Egypt grow by sharing ideas and goods with both areas. Early explorers noticed that the pottery and trade from this time looked new and different, showing connections with the Middle East.
Excavations at Nabta Playa, a place in Nubia (about 100 km west of Abu Simbel), show that people living there long ago came from areas south of the Sahara. Some think these people might have been the ancestors of the Egyptians because of similar cultures and ways of living. We also find signs that sheep and goats came to Nabta Playa from Western Asia about 8,000 years ago.
Discoveries at a cemetery in Qustul, Nubia, made some think that Egypt’s kings might have started there. But newer finds at Abydos in Upper Egypt show that Egyptian kings began earlier than the tombs in Qustul. Sadly, we can no longer dig at Qustul because a big lake covered the area. Studies of the A-Group culture from 3500 to 2800 BCE suggest that Nubia had a big effect on early Egypt before influence from far-away lands.
Researchers also found that evidence does not support the idea that farmers moved from Asia into northern Africa. Instead, it looks like local hunter-gatherers slowly began to raise animals. Some ancient stone structures in Niger and the Eastern Sahara might have inspired the big buildings of ancient Egypt. Pictures carved on rocks in the Eastern Desert might show some of the first royal crowns. Recent digs near Aswan show early pictures of crowns and boats, dating back to between 3200 BCE and 3100 BCE.
Cultural anthropological practices and population influences
Egypt’s history shows strong links with African cultures. Scholars think the early Egyptian writing and symbols came from African traditions. The land’s position made it a place where many cultures met, sharing ideas and customs.
Archaeologists find clues that early Egyptian ways of counting and designs came from Africa south of the Sahara. Ancient Egyptian culture shared many practices with people far to the south, like special ways of ruling and important traditions. Some experts believe the roots of Egyptian culture lie in areas south of Egypt, showing deep ties to African peoples and lands.
DNA studies

Studying DNA from ancient Egyptians is difficult because handling can pollute the samples, and microbes can damage them. Most DNA studies look at modern Egyptians to understand how historical movements affected their population. These studies show that modern Northeast Africans, like those from Sudan and the Horn of Africa, share similarities with North African and Middle Eastern groups and have some "Eurasian" mixed ancestry. Looking at specific parts of DNA, scientists have found very old African lineages in modern Egyptians, along with later influences from Near Eastern and European groups.
In 2017, scientists extracted DNA from 151 ancient Egyptian mummies found at Abusir el-Meleq in Middle Egypt. This was the first time they got good DNA data from ancient Egyptians using advanced methods. The mummies dated from the late New Kingdom to the Roman era (1388 BCE–426 CE). They found that the ancient Egyptians in this group had very similar DNA patterns, and modern Egyptians share this pattern but also have more African DNA types. The ancient Egyptians were more closely related to people from the Near East and Levant than to modern Egyptians. However, modern Egyptians are still the closest match. The study also looked at three mummies for a specific type of DNA and found they had lineages common in the Middle East and North Africa. The researchers noted that these mummies might not represent all ancient Egyptians since they came from one location. They observed that the genetics of the Abusir el-Meleq community did not change much over 1,300 years, indicating that foreign conquests and rule did not greatly affect the local population's genetics.
Because the 2017 study only looked at one site, researchers in 2022 collected samples from six different places along the Nile Valley, covering 4000 years of history. They studied 81 samples from 17 mummies and 14 skeletal remains and reconstructed high-quality DNA from 10 individuals. The results supported the earlier findings from Abusir el-Meleq.
A 2020 DNA study examined family members of Tutankhamun from the 18th Dynasty, using careful methods to ensure accuracy. They found specific DNA types that originate in West Asia and make up a large part of modern European DNA. Another type of DNA was also found, likely from the Near East. Because the DNA profiles for Tutankhamun and Amenhotep III were incomplete, different results showed varying probabilities despite matching allele results. The analysis also showed that the Yuya mummy had a DNA type and the mitochondrial DNA type H2b, both indicating West Asian and Near Eastern lineages for Tutankhamun's family. The study referenced an older one showing that Ramesses III and his son had a DNA type common in West and Central Africa but rare in North Africans and nearly absent in East Africa.
In 2010, researchers conducted detailed studies on the royal mummies of King Tutankhamun as part of the King Tutankhamun Family Project. The goals included determining family relationships among 11 royal mummies from the New Kingdom and researching potential inherited disorders and infectious diseases. In 2012, researchers studied the mummies of Ramesses III and an unknown man found together. In 2022, another researcher analyzed data from these studies and concluded that most samples, including Tutankhamun and Ramesses III, showed affinity with sub-Saharan Africans in one analysis. However, the researcher noted that this did not mean they lacked other affiliations, as different data and methods might yield different results, reflecting the complexity of biological heritage.
A genetic analysis of a modern Upper Egyptian population in Adaima identified common African genetic markers, with 71% carrying a specific type and 3% carrying another. A review in the UNESCO General History of Africa Volume IX in 2025 noted that these results were preliminary and need confirmation from other labs using new methods. This was supported by an anthropological study finding dental markers characteristic of Khoisan people in a predynastic-era cemetery at Adaïma. The genetic marker E1b1 was found widely across Egypt, likely originating in eastern tropical Africa and distributed from the Horn of Africa through Egypt. Multiple analyses of Amarna royal mummies suggested strong affinities with modern Sub-Saharan populations. However, these analyses were limited as they only used part of the available genetic markers.
Ancient DNA and genomic evidence
The population history of ancient Egypt was mainly studied through archaeology, texts, and language. Because Egypt’s climate is hot and dry, ancient DNA does not preserve well, and for many years, there was very little genetic data from early Egyptians. Models of population continuity and outside influence were mostly guesses.
A major breakthrough happened in 2025 with the first full genome sequence from an individual from Egypt’s Old Kingdom. This person, an adult male from Nuwayrat in Middle Egypt, lived between 2855 and 2570 BC. Genomic analysis showed that this individual’s ancestry was mostly related to North African Neolithic populations, showing strong continuity in the Nile Valley from earlier groups. About 20–24% of the genome showed links to populations in the Eastern Fertile Crescent, including areas like Neolithic Mesopotamia. This provides direct evidence of gene flow between Egypt and the Near East before and during the early dynastic period.
The results suggest that interactions between Egypt and neighboring regions happened through gradual movement and mixing of people, not large migrations or population replacements. This matches archaeological evidence of long-distance trade networks linking the Nile Valley with the Levant and Mesopotamia during the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.
Comparisons with a 2017 genetic study from later periods show that Egypt’s population changed over time, with more Near Eastern and, in recent history, sub-Saharan African genetic contributions. The Old Kingdom genome provides a baseline for understanding long-term demographic changes in Egypt and shows the value of ancient DNA in improving models of population history.
The authors noted limitations of the 2025 study, such as using only one Egyptian genome for analysis, and difficulties in predicting certain traits in understudied populations. Analyses did not find substantial ancestry related to a 4,500-year-old hunter-gatherer genome from Ethiopia or other individuals from central, eastern, or southern Africa.
Regarding the facial reconstruction, the researchers noted that while the DNA analysis suggests population origin, there was no physical evidence of skin colour, eye colour, or hair colour. Therefore, the reconstruction was done in black and white without hair or facial features.
Multidisciplinary perspectives on population genetics
Researchers value DNA studies for showing ancestral relationships and migration patterns but caution against relying too much on them. DNA studies are new, have limited samples, and can be interpreted with bias. It is best to use DNA studies alongside other fields like archaeology, historical linguistics, and physical anthropology to understand ancient Egyptians’ origins.
Anthropologist Alain Anselin found that linguistic and archaeological data matched early genetic findings on Upper Egyptians in Gurna, showing a remnant of a specific DNA type and sub-Saharan links. This suggests that Egypt’s current population may result from influences from neighbouring groups on ancestral populations. Anselin also suggested that combining historical genetics with recent archaeological digs in the Western Desert could explain Egypt’s peopling, with Saharan links identified in earlier reviews.
However, historian William Stiebling and archaeologist Susan N. Helft noted that conflicting DNA analyses on recent samples, like the Amarna royal mummies, have led to disagreement about ancient Egyptians’ genetic makeup and origins. They pointed out that the 2017 study, though the largest on ancient Egyptians, used a small sample from one site in Middle Egypt from the New Kingdom onward and might not represent earlier populations or those from Upper Egypt, closer to Sub-Saharan groups.
Gourdine et al. criticised the methods of the Scheunemann et al. study, arguing that Sub-Saharan "genetic links" might come from "early settlers" and that the genetic markers do not match known trade routes. However, modern DNA studies link this Sub-Saharan influence to the trans-Saharan slave trade in Egypt and Morocco, dating it to 700 years ago in Egypt and 1200 years ago in Morocco. Historic estimates suggest that 6 million black slaves were moved across the Sahara between 650 AD and 1500 AD.
In 2022, archaeologist Danielle Candelora noted limitations in the 2017 Scheunemann et al. study, such as untested sampling methods, small sample size, and problematic data comparisons. She argued these were misused to support racist ideas about Ancient Egypt with "scientific evidence".
In 2025, UNESCO’s International Scientific Committee Chair, Augustin Holl, reaffirmed that Egypt had both African and Eurasian populations. The review noted confirmed migrations from the Sahara and regions south of Egypt into the Nile Valley, with genetic, linguistic, archaeological, and anthropological studies showing strong links between Upper Egyptians and Sub-Saharan groups. However, Holl and Jean Gourdine criticised the 2017 Scheunemann study for its geographical coverage, conclusions about Egypt’s population, and methods. Gourdine argued there were biases in interpretation and that conclusions conflicted with other analyses, such as Amarna STR analysis and evidence of African haplogroups like E1b1b1, JK2955 (haplogroup L3) and JK2963 (haplogroup M1a1i), which existed before the trans-Saharan slave trade in Egypt.
Canadian historian Elise K Burton (2025) argued that recent ancient DNA research is heavily influenced by debates over the ethnicity of ancient Egyptians. She said that perspectives from Western, West African, and Egyptian scientists have shaped how genetic research is interpreted, causing conflicts over access to ancient Egyptian remains. She criticised early attempts by Cheikh Anta Diop to use paleoserology, which reflected European racial standards. Burton also criticised nationalist sentiments among Egyptian scholars like Zahi Hawass, who restrict foreign access to royal mummies to maintain “genetic sovereignty”. She noted that anti-black racism continues in Egyptian society and that Egyptian nationalist genetics has its own racialist aspects. Burton also highlighted that Euro-American researchers benefit from historical colonialism, which provided many Egyptian mummies in European museums. She mentioned that recent studies like the 2017 DNA study have been interpreted through a racialised lens.
Biological anthropometric indicators
The study of physical traits has long been used to understand how people in Egypt were related to others. Early researchers thought skull shape could show ethnicity, but later studies showed that climate and environment have a big impact on these traits.
Research suggests that ancient Egyptians from different times and places were closely related to people speaking similar languages in nearby areas, like those in the Horn of Africa and North Africa. They shared traits with Europeans and people from the Indian subcontinent, but were distinct from groups in Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, Oceania, and the Americas.
More recent studies look at bone and teeth shapes to understand these relationships better. Findings show that ancient Egyptians had physical traits in common with people from tropical Africa, but also showed changes likely due to living in Egypt’s hot climate over time. These studies help paint a picture of Egypt’s rich and connected history.

The Ancient Egyptian language has six main stages, from very old times up until today. The last stage, called Coptic, was used for everyday life until the 1700s and is still used in special religious ways by Egyptian Copts.
Origins
Ancient Egyptian is part of a big language family called Afroasiatic. Experts think it is most closely related to languages spoken by people in places like Berber and Hebrew areas. Others think it may also share roots with languages from parts of Africa far to the east.
Some believe the Afroasiatic languages started thousands of years ago in a big area stretching from North Africa to places near the Red Sea and even further. Most of these languages are spoken in Africa, with just one group in Asia. Nearby, people in Nubia spoke a different language family called Nilo-Saharan language family. Before new languages arrived, an older branch called Cushitic was spoken in parts of ancient Nubia.
