Premio Presidente della Repubblica (prize)

The Premio Presidente della Repubblica is a special award from Italy. It was started by Luigi Einaudi, a former president and teacher. Since 1949, this award has been given out regularly by three important groups: the Accademia dei Lincei, the Accademia di San Luca, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. This prize is one of the most respected awards these groups give out, and it honors people who have done great work in their fields.

History

The Premio Presidente della Repubblica award was started on October 11, 1948, by Luigi Einaudi. He wrote a letter to the president of the Lincei National Academy to keep the tradition of royal awards alive. The prize was first given to people who studied physical, mathematical, and natural sciences, as well as those who studied history and languages.

That same year, Einaudi also started a national prize for artists and architects, given by the academies of San Luca and Santa Cecilia. The prize is presented by the current President of Italy during a special ceremony. Some winners have also received other famous awards like the Nobel Prize, the Wolf Prize, and the Academy Award.
