Psycholinguistics, also called the psychology of language, studies how our minds and brains connect with language. It looks at how we learn, understand, and create language. This field is very interested in the mental skills and brain processes that help us use language correctly and understand what others say.
At first, studying psycholinguistics began in philosophy and education because it was often studied outside of applied sciences. Today, scientists use biology, neuroscience, cognitive science, linguistics, and information science to explore how our minds and brains work with language. They also look at human development, communication, and how infants learn to speak.
There are special areas within psycholinguistics that use safe ways to study the brain. One of these is neurolinguistics, which focuses on the brain’s role in language. Another is developmental psycholinguistics, which studies how children learn to speak and understand language.

Researchers might look at how we recognize words when we read, or how we prepare to speak. Some scientists focus on how babies and children learn and process language. Psycholinguistics also looks at different parts of language, such as phonetics and phonology (studying speech sounds), morphology (studying word structures), syntax (how words form sentences), semantics (the meaning of words and sentences), pragmatics (how context changes meaning), and linguistic relativity (how language might shape how we see the world).
History
Psycholinguistics studies how our minds and brains help us learn, understand, and use language. It started with old debates about whether behaviors are born with us or learned.
As ideas changed over time, scientists could again study behaviors that seemed natural, like speaking, as part of our mental life. The idea of psycholinguistics began in the late 1800s as the "psychology of language." Important work by Edward Thorndike and Frederic Bartlett helped start this field.
The word "psycholinguistics" was first used in 1936 by psychologist Jacob Kantor. It became more common in 1946 when Nicholas Pronko wrote an article about it. Later, in 1954, Charles E. Osgood and Thomas A. Sebeok used the term to describe a united study of language and mind.
Theories
Language acquisition

There are two main ideas about how children learn language. One idea is that all language must be taught to the child. The other idea is that humans are born with a special ability to learn language, and that we have an inner guide called "universal grammar" that helps us understand complex patterns in language. This idea started in 1959 when a person named Noam Chomsky questioned another idea about how we learn language. He believed that humans have a natural talent for understanding language, and that we can learn very complicated rules without being taught.

How we understand language is linked to how we think and see the world. Some believe that when we talk or read, we use different parts of our brain that work together to understand meaning. Only later do they realize the evidence is being examined. Others think our brain uses all clues right away to understand the sentence better.

Methodologies
Many studies in psycholinguistics look at how people understand and use language by watching how they behave. In these studies, people are given words or sentences and asked to respond in certain ways. Scientists measure how quickly people respond and how often they answer correctly. Sometimes, they use special words to help make people react faster to certain words later.
One example of this type of study looked at how people recognize words. Participants had to decide if pairs of letters were real English words. The study found that people responded faster when the words were related in meaning, like "cat" and "dog," compared to unrelated words like "bread" and "stem." These methods help uncover how language shapes our thoughts and senses.
