Puroik language
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Puroik language is spoken by the Puroik people who live in Arunachal Pradesh in India and in Lhünzê County, Tibet, in China. It is also known as Sulung, but this name was used by other tribes in a way that was not kind or respectful.
People who speak Puroik also know other languages like Nishi, Hindi, and Assamese. However, not many Puroik people can read and write their language. Only about 2% of them know how to read or write. Those who can write Puroik use different writing styles, including the Bengali-Assamese script, Devanagari, or the Latin alphabet.
Geographical distribution
The Puroik people live in several areas of Arunachal Pradesh, such as East Kameng District, Kurung Kumey District, Kra Daadi District, Papum Pare District, West Kameng District, and Upper Subansiri District. They also have villages near the Par River.
In China, Puroik people are found in Lhünzê County. Altogether, there are around 3,000 Puroik people. They are recognized as part of the ethnic Lhoba group by the Chinese government.
Dialects
The Puroik language has many different ways of speaking, called dialects. These dialects are quite different from each other if they are far apart, but they are easier to understand when they are close by.
Some of the dialects include:
- Kurung-Kumey dialect: spoken in Kurung Kumey district.
- Chayangtajo dialect: spoken in Chayangtajo and nearby villages in Arunachal Pradesh, India.
- Lasumpatte dialect: spoken in Lasumpatte village near the Assam border.
- Sario-Saria dialect: spoken in three villages.
- Rawa dialect: spoken in several villages around Rawa.
- Kojo-Rojo dialect: spoken in the villages of Kojo and Rojo.
- Bulu dialect: spoken only in Bulu village by a very small number of people.
Classification
The Puroik language is often thought to belong to the Sino-Tibetan language family, which includes many languages spoken in Asia. Some experts believe it is closely related to languages like Bugun and Sherdukpen. Others think it might be a unique language that does not belong to any larger family.
Different researchers have different ideas about where Puroik fits, showing that learning about languages can be complex and interesting!

Grammar
The Puroik language does not use special words to show if things are singular or plural, but it can use words like "all" or "many" when needed. It also does not have special words for boys and girls, but can show a person’s gender by adding special endings to names.
Puroik has seven types of cases, which help show how words relate to each other in a sentence. Personal pronouns in Puroik can be used for the speaker, the person being spoken to, or others, and can be singular or plural.
Verbs in Puroik do not change to show who or how many people are doing the action. Instead, they use small words added at the end to show when something happens or to give commands. Adverbs in Puroik describe time, place, manner, or ask questions.
Vocabulary
This section shows a list of 181 words from three different Puroik dialects. It also includes words from an older version of the language called Proto-Puroik. The words come from research done in 2015, using data from several dialects like Chayangtajo, Kojo-Rojo, Bulu, Rawa, and Saria.
