Rowing at the 1984 Summer Olympics

Rowing at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, United States featured 14 events for both men and women. The competitions took place at Lake Casitas.

Because many strong rowing countries, including East Germany, the USSR, and Bulgaria, boycotted these Olympics, some teams had a special chance to shine. Romania stood out, winning many gold medals in women’s events. Canada and the USA also performed well, beating the expected champions in some races.

Famous rowers like Steve Redgrave began their Olympic journeys here, winning his first of many gold medals. Another strong competitor, Elisabeta Oleniuc, later known as Elisabeta Lipă, also won her first gold medal and went on to win more in later Games, even twenty years later at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

In the quadruple sculls events, men rowed without a coxswain, while women rowed with one, continuing the format from earlier Olympics.
