The Saxon State Police, known in German as Polizei Sachsen, is the main police force for the German state of Saxony, Germany. It works to keep people safe and maintain order across the region. The police are led by the Saxony State Interior Ministry, which oversees all of their activities.

Currently, Horst Kretzschmar serves as the Chief of State Police, managing the day-to-day operations. The political leader of the police is Roland Wöller, the Minister for the Interior in Saxony, who belongs to the CDU political party. Together, they help guide how the police support communities and enforce laws in Saxony.

Organization

The main leader of the Saxon State Police is Horst Kretschmar, and he works in Dresden. Police officers go to a special school called the University of Applied Police Science. This school is in two places: Rothenburg and Bautzen.

There is also a special group called the Riot Police, and their office is in Leipzig. Their leader is Dirk Lichtenberger. In 2018, the police started using a new type of gun. The Riot Police has three helicopters for their work.

History

In 1936, the local police forces in the German Reich were reorganized by the Nazis and placed under the control of Heinrich Himmler. All police offices in Saxony became part of a larger group in Berlin. After World War II, Saxony was under the control of the Soviet Union, and the local police became part of the East German police force. Soviet officers tried to recruit people who opposed the Nazis to become police officers.

In 1990, the Saxony State Police began recruiting former police officers to join their team.
