Even today, one part of the city is still called “o garimpo,” which means “the goldmine.” The city of Sete Lagoas was officially founded in 1867. Even though its name means “Seven Lakes,” there are actually more than seven lakes there now. Some were dug out, and others became part of the city as it grew. There are seven lakes that the city officially recognizes. They are: Lagoa da Boa Vista, Lagoa da Catarina, Lagoa da Chácara, Lagoa do Cercadinho, Lagoa José Felix, Lagoa do Matadouro and Lagoa Paulino.

These two teams used to have exciting matches called the "Clássico dos sertões," or the Countryside's Derby. Their old stadiums were just one block apart, adding to the excitement of their rivalry.

Other football clubs in the city include Ideal Sport Club and América Futebol Clube. In 2010 and 2011, Arena do Jacaré was also used by teams from Belo Horizonte while their own stadiums were being updated.
