Soviet Union at the 1956 Winter Olympics
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Soviet Union (USSR) took part in the Winter Olympic Games for the very first time at the 1956 Winter Olympics held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. This was a big moment because it marked the Soviet Union's debut in the winter sports world.
The Soviet Olympians joined in six of the eight sports events, choosing not to compete in bobsleigh or ice figure skating. The team had 53 athletes coming from 11 different cities across 4 union republics. By the end of the games, they had won 16 medals—7 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze—placing them at the top of the medal table. Austria, the second-place team, won 11 medals.
One special highlight was when Pavel Kolchin became the first Soviet athlete to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. Later that same day, Lyubov Kozyreva brought home the first gold medal for the Soviet Union, and soon after, Yevgeny Grishin added another gold to their collection. It was a proud moment for the Soviet team and their fans.

In this table, for team events, we count the number of team members who won medals, not just one medal for the whole team. This is because athletes from different republics were on the same team.
