Space adaptation syndrome, also called space sickness, is something that happens to many space travelers when they first get used to living without gravity. Up to half of all people who travel to space experience this condition when they enter orbit. It’s different from regular motion sickness you might feel in a car or on a boat because it happens when the body feels like it’s moving, but there’s no real feeling of motion inside the body.

When astronauts go into space, they live in weightlessness, which means they float around. This new environment can confuse the body, especially the part that helps us know where we are in space. Because of this confusion, many astronauts feel sick, dizzy, or tired for the first few days. Most people get better after a short time, but it’s an important thing to understand for anyone planning to travel to space.

Space motion sickness can make it hard for astronauts to work well. It can reduce their awareness of their surroundings and create safety risks in environments with very little gravity. When astronauts return to Earth, they may find it difficult to move because they have lost muscle mass. This can be dangerous if they need to leave quickly in an emergency.

Other health issues can also happen in space, such as problems with bones and hydration, which might cause sudden pain. These issues can affect the heart and blood systems, making it hard for astronauts to adjust when they come back to normal gravity. Special steps are needed to keep astronauts safe in environments with very little gravity.

Cause

When astronauts travel into space, they experience something called space adaptation syndrome, also known as space sickness. This happens because their bodies are not used to the lack of gravity. In space, their surroundings may seem to move, but their bodies do not feel like they are moving. This mismatch can make them feel sick and disoriented.

Our balance system, which helps us know where we are, gets confused when gravity changes. This can lead to nausea and other uncomfortable feelings. Sleep loss can make these symptoms worse. Special medicine patches are sometimes used during space walks to prevent sickness, but astronauts usually adapt to space naturally within a few days.

Management

Space sickness happens because of a mismatch between what our eyes see and what our body feels. To help with it, astronauts can focus on a small area, like a book or a screen, or even close their eyes until they feel better. This helps their body adjust to the new surroundings.

Some people feel very sick in space, with symptoms like nausea and headaches. One famous astronaut, Jake Garn, felt extremely sick during a space flight in 1985, and now there’s even a “Garn scale” to describe how sick someone might feel. Most people feel better after a few days, but some can stay sick even after returning to Earth while their body gets used to gravity again.

History

In August 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov became the first person to feel sick in space on Vostok 2; he was the first person to vomit in space.

Early space missions, like the Mercury and Gemini series, didn’t report much sickness. This might be because the spacecraft were very small and didn’t allow much movement. Space sickness seems to happen more when astronauts can move around freely, especially moving their heads, which is easier in larger spacecraft.
