Stockholm County

Stockholm County (Swedish: Stockholms län) is a county on the Baltic Sea coast of Sweden. It borders Uppsala County and Södermanland County, and it is also near Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. The city of Stockholm, which is the capital of Sweden, is located here.

The county is divided by the historic provinces of Uppland (Roslagen) and Södermanland (Södertörn). More than one fifth of the Swedish population lives in Stockholm County, making it very important. With over two million people, it is the most crowded part of Sweden.

Stockholm County is also one of the statistical riksområden (national areas) in the EU, following the NUTS:SE and Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics system. This helps experts study and plan for the area's growth and needs.

History

Stockholm County was created a long time ago, in the year 1714. Back then, the City of Stockholm was its own special area and was not included in the county. Even though it was separate, the city was still the main place for the county's leaders.

Later, on January 1, 1968, big changes happened. The city and the county joined together. Also, some areas changed which county they belonged to. Upplands-Bro Municipality moved from Uppsala County, and part of what is now Östhammar Municipality went to Uppsala County.

Geography

Stockholm County is located along the coast of the Baltic Sea in Sweden. It shares borders with Uppsala County and Södermanland County. The county also touches the water bodies Mälaren and the Baltic Sea.

The area includes several lakes such as Flemingsbergsviken, Karptjärn, Långsjön, Hanveden, Lundsjön–Dammsjön, Måsnaren, Ramsjön, Haninge kommun, Segersjön, Strålsjön, Tullan, and Yngern.

There are two national parks in the county: Tyresta National Park and Ängsö National Park. Tyresta, established in 1993, features old forests, lakes, and wetlands. Ängsö, established in 1909, is located on an island and includes meadows and forests. The county also has Royal National City Park, which was created by law in 1994 and is considered the world's first national urban park. It contains forests, cliffs, and historic buildings.

Economy

The Gross domestic product of Stockholm County was 145.6 billion € in 2018. This made up 30.9% of all the money made by Sweden that year. For each person, the money made was €49,500, which is much higher than the average in Europe. The money made for each worker was also higher than the average in Europe.

Heraldry

The county of Stockholm received its official symbol, called arms, in 1968. These arms mix the symbols of Uppland, Södermanland, and the city of Stockholm. When the symbol is shown with a royal crown, it stands for the County Administrative Board.

The Stockholm county is home to many people, with a current population of 2,440,027. Officials have been keeping track of where people come from since 2002. This helps understand the different backgrounds of the residents.

SCB

County Administrative Board

Before 1968, the County of Stockholm did not include the City of Stockholm. The city was managed by the Office of the Governor of Stockholm, while the county covered the surrounding countryside. The county had its own Governor of Stockholm County.

The main job of the County Administrative Board is to carry out the goals set by the Riksdag and the Government. It works to coordinate the county's interests, support its growth, set regional goals, and ensure fair handling of each case. The County Administrative Board is a Government Agency led by a governor.

County council

The local administration of the county is under the Stockholm County Council. It is mainly in charge of the public healthcare system and public transport.

The county council has 149 members who are elected every four years at the same time as the general elections. The county council elects an executive committee to carry out its policies. The leader of this committee is called the Commissioner of Finance and is currently Aida Hadzialic from the Social Democratic Party. The committee includes members from both the ruling party and the opposition.

Public transport

The county council looks after the public transport in Stockholm. Two main companies manage the system: Storstockholms Lokaltrafik runs buses, trams, and trains, while Waxholmsbolaget handles boat services. The council also oversees special transport services and share taxi routes.

Culture and education

In addition to health and transport, the county council also runs the Stockholm County Museum and two agricultural high schools located in Berga and Säbyholm.
