The Republic of San Marino is a small country that is divided into nine areas called castelli. These castelli are like the first-level divisions that help organize the country. Each castello has its own leader called a Captain of the Castle (Italian: capitano di castello) and a group of people called a Castle Council (giunta di castello) who help make decisions. These leaders are chosen every five years by the people living there.

Each castello also has a main town called a capital (capoluogo), and there are smaller places around it known as curazie. San Marino has 44 of these curazie, which are the smallest parts of the country. The Captain of the Castle does many important jobs, similar to a mayor. They help with local rules, marriages, planning, and assist people with their needs.

In the past, the Captains were chosen by a bigger group, but now people can vote for them directly. Since 2020, even people from other countries who have lived in San Marino for ten years or more can help choose these leaders. Each Castle Council has a number of members based on how many people live in that castello, with smaller areas having six members and larger ones having eight. These councils work much like the local groups in Italy that take care of community needs.

Castelli

San Marino is divided into nine areas called castelli. Each castello has its own leader and a small group of people to help run it, chosen every five years. Like in other places, each castello has a main town, with smaller villages around it.
