Sumo languages

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

Sumo languages, also called Sumu, are a group of related languages from the Misumalpan family. These languages are mainly spoken in the countries of Nicaragua and Honduras. Experts who study these languages, like Ken Hale, have found that there are two main groups. The northern group is called Mayangna and includes dialects like Tawahka and Panamahka. The southern group is called Ulwa. Because the Ulwa language is quite different from Mayangna in its words and structure, some specialists think of Ulwa as a separate language. These languages are important for understanding the culture and history of the people who speak them.
