In 2016, a new elevated station opened on October 16, and the old ground-level station closed. The first train arrived at the new station at 06:28, and President Tsai Ing-wen and Transportation and Communication Minister Hochen Tan attended the opening ceremony.

Overview

The old Taichung railway station has one side platform and one island platform. Its architecture dates back to the time when Taiwan was under Japanese rule and it is protected as a National Tier 2 Historic Site. There was also a line called the Taiwan Sugar Railways' Zhong-Zhuo line that used to stop at the station, but it is no longer in use.

The new station has one side platform and two island platforms. Right now, only one side platform and one island platform are in use, and their numbering is the opposite of the old station.
