Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport (IATA: TFN, ICAO: GCXO), formerly Los Rodeos Airport, is the smaller of the two international airports on the island of Tenerife, Spain. It is located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, 11 km (7 mi) by road from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, at an elevation of 633 metres (2,077 ft). In 2025, the airport handled over seven million passengers. Together with Tenerife South Airport, it helps make Tenerife the busiest island in the Canary Islands, with more than twenty-one million passengers passing through each year.

This airport is an important hub, connecting all seven main Canary Islands to the Iberian Peninsula and many parts of Europe. It plays a big role in tourism and travel for people visiting the beautiful Canary Islands.

Sadly, in 1977, the airport was the site of a very serious aviation accident. Two large Boeing 747s crashed into each other on the runway in thick fog, which was a tragic event in airplane history.

History

Many years before the airport was built, a field at Los Rodeos was used for an unofficial flight from Berlin. In May 1930, the first regular air link between mainland Spain and the Canary Islands started, using a small plane that flew from Madrid to Los Rodeos.

The airport officially opened in 1946 with a small terminal and a short runway. Over the years, the runway was extended to accommodate bigger airplanes. A new airport opened in the south of Tenerife in 1978 because fog often covered the northern airport, making flights unsafe. Tenerife North got a new terminal in 2002 and started international flights again. Since then, several airlines have added new routes, including flights to Miami and Caracas.
