Terra Nova National Park

Terra Nova National Park is found on the northeast coast of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It lies along several inlets of Bonavista Bay and gets its name from the Latin name for Newfoundland, which was also the original Portuguese name for the region.

The park has a varied and rugged landscape shaped by remnants of the Appalachian Mountains. Its coastline features rocky cliffs, sheltered inlets, and coves, making it a great spot for boating. The land inside the park includes rolling forested hills, rocky faces, and wet areas like bogs, ponds, and wetlands.

Terra Nova National Park protects many kinds of wildlife, from small to large land mammals and migratory birds to marine life in the surrounding waters. The park also safeguards parts of the land once used by the Beothuk Nation and early European settlers.

Established in 1957, Terra Nova was the first National Park in Newfoundland and Labrador. It helps protect the Eastern Island Boreal Forest natural region, which stretches across much of Newfoundland’s island east of Deer Lake. This forest is mainly made up of black spruce trees, with some areas of balsam fir, white pine, mountain ash, tamarack, maple, and other deciduous tree species.

Activities

There are two campgrounds where you can stay close to the park: Newman Sound and Malady Head. You can also explore backcountry areas by hiking, canoeing, or kayaking. The park has many trails for walks of different lengths and difficulty levels. The main visitor centre is at Salton's Brook.

During the summer, Terra Nova offers fun programs. Almost every night, there is a show at the Evening Theatre with topics about the park. Some shows are "Go With the Flo" and "Forest Idol". Once a week, you can join a campfire program where you can enjoy sounds of Newfoundland and drink hot chocolate. There are also special walks that teach about topics like forest fires and plants you can eat.

Other summer fun includes swimming in fresh water and riding mountain bikes. Kids can join the Junior Naturalist Program to earn stamps to become a junior naturalist. Older kids can use a workbook with fun activities in the Graduate Naturalist Program.

Terra Nova holds special events like Canada Day on July 1, Kids Day, Newfoundland and Labrador day, Take a Hike Day, and Oceans Day on June 8. In winter, you can try winter camping, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Fauna

Terra Nova National Park is home to many interesting animals. You can find coyotes, black bears that live only on the island, moose, and caribou that are also unique to the island. There are also black ducks, red foxes, beavers, bald eagles, red squirrels, river otters, lynxes, puffins, snowshoe hares, ospreys, pine martens, and minks.

In the ocean near the park, you can see humpback whales, minke whales, fin whales, pilot whales, harp seals, orcas, and dolphins.

Geology

Terra Nova National Park is part of a region called Avalonia, named after the Avalon Peninsula. This area is linked to big mountain ranges known as the Appalachian Orogen. The park has different types of rocks, such as quartzite, slate, and greywacke, especially in the eastern part. In the western part, near the Trans Canada Highway, you can find other rocks like reddish sandstone and conglomerate. Long ago, during the Pleistocene era, a huge ice cap covered the island and left behind lots of glacial debris in the western part of the park.

Climate

Terra Nova National Park has a cool and moist climate, shaped by its location near the ocean. The park experiences cold winters and mild summers, with plenty of rain and snow throughout the year. This kind of climate helps create lush forests and beautiful coastal landscapes that make the park a special place to visit.
