Thylacocephala

Thylacocephala is an ancient group of small sea creatures that lived millions of years ago. Their name comes from Greek words meaning "pouch" and "head." Scientists think they were a kind of crustacean, which includes animals like crabs and shrimp, but they are not exactly sure where they fit in this group.
These creatures had a hard shell that covered their whole body and big, round eyes on the front of their shell. They had three large pairs of arms used for catching food and many small swimming legs on their belly. They ranged in size from about the length of a small ant to as big as a hand.
The oldest clear fossils of thylacocephalans are from about 460 to 450 million years ago, during a time called the Upper Ordovician. They were still around around 84 million years ago, in a time called the Santonian part of the Upper Cretaceous. Even today, scientists are still learning about how these animals lived and how they are related to other sea creatures.
Research history
The Thylacocephala is a newly described group of creatures, first noticed at the turn of the last century. Early scientists thought they belonged to a group called phyllocarids, but they looked different because they lacked certain body parts.
In the early 1980s, three groups of scientists, working separately, each decided these creatures needed their own special classification. One group, studying a specimen from Italy, named the group Thylacocephala. Another group, looking at a species from France, called it Conchyliocarida. A third group, examining fossils from Australia, named it Concavicarida. Eventually, scientists agreed they were all studying the same group of creatures, and the name Thylacocephala was kept, while the other two names became smaller groups within it.
Taxonomy
Researchers think Thylacocephala are a special group of ancient creatures. Some scientists tried to split them into two groups:

Concavicarida: These have special parts like a big notch for their eyes, a fused front part, and several body segments that get smaller toward the front and back. This group includes creatures from different times, like the Silurian and Devonian.

Conchyliocarida: These lack the eye notch and have eyes on a sac-like head part. They also don’t have a fused front part. This group includes creatures from the Carboniferous to the Jurassic periods.
However, some scientists think these groups might not be accurate because the features used to tell them apart could be influenced by the environment. They believe better ways to tell these creatures apart might be found in their body segments and attachments, but this is hard to study because of their hard outer shell.

Anatomy
Thylacocephala are a group of ancient sea creatures that had a hard shell covering their whole body. They had special long, grabbing arms and very large eyes. Their shell was flat on the sides and often had patterns or ridges. Because their shell covered everything, scientists know very little about the inside of their bodies from fossils alone.
Affinities
Thylacocephala are definitely arthropods, but scientists are not sure exactly where they belong in the arthropod family tree. They were once thought to be a type of crustacean, like crabs or shrimp, but there is no solid proof of this.
One feature that suggests they might be crustaceans is their shell-like cover, called a carapace. However, this feature has evolved many times in different arthropods, so it is not a strong clue. Scientists are still looking for more evidence, such as the arrangement of mouthparts or the presence of certain body parts like mandibles or antennae, to help determine their exact place.
Different scientists have suggested various possibilities for where thylacocephalans might fit, including with groups like maxillopods, stomatopods, remipedes, and decapods. Some recent studies suggest they might be a more basic type of arthropod, placed outside the crustaceans, while others still support a crustacean connection.
In 2025, a study used special imaging techniques to look inside fossil thylacocephalans and suggested they are true crustaceans, closely related to a group called Malacostraca. More research is needed to reach a clear conclusion.
Disagreements
Scientists have different ideas about Thylacocephala, especially between researchers in Italy and others around the world. One group studied fossils called Ostenocaris cypriformis from Lombardy and thought the front part of these creatures was not an eye but a special sac. They believed this because they thought they saw fish bones inside, which they mistook for eggs.
However, most other scientists think this front part is actually a large eye made of many small parts called ommatidia. They point to very well-preserved fossils of another creature, Dollocaris ingens, where even tiny eye cells can be seen. These scientists argue that Thylacocephala eyes share many features with eyes of other ancient arthropods.
The debate has mostly ended in recent years, with most experts now agreeing the front structure is an eye. The confusion likely came from how the fossils were preserved in the Osteno area.
Mode of life
Scientists have many ideas about how thylacocephalans lived. One idea is that Dollocaris ingens was too big to swim and would wait on the sea floor to catch food. They might have eaten remains left by sharks, found in the stomachs of some thylacocephalans.
Others think thylacocephalans could swim in dim light because of their thin bodies, special spines, swimming legs, and big eyes. Some from the time of the Cretaceous period in Lebanon show signs they could swim and maybe even stay together in groups.
Some believe thylacocephalans lived in deeper water, similar to certain modern creatures, and could come up to catch food during the day. They might have used oil from their food to help them float. Others suggest they lived partly buried in soft mud on the sea floor.
Findings from the Gogo formation show thylacocephalans lived in shallow water near reefs. Their body shape might have helped them hide in rock crevices.
One scientist thinks bigger thylacocephalans lived in turbulent water, using their legs to move, while smaller ones lived in calmer water and used speed to catch food.
Fossils from the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland show that thylacocephalans were sometimes eaten by predatory fish during the Late Devonian epoch.
