Toronto Granites

The Toronto Granites were an amateur senior ice hockey team from Toronto, Ontario. They were very successful, winning the Allan Cup in 1922 and 1923, which is a big prize in ice hockey.

Because of their great performance, the Toronto Granites were chosen to represent Canada at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. This was a big honor for the team and for Canada.

At the Olympics, the Granites played excellent hockey and won the gold medal for Canada. This was the second time in a row that Canada's men's ice hockey team brought home the gold, making the Toronto Granites a very important part of hockey history.

History

The Toronto Granites were formed in the 1880s and were the first organized ice hockey team in Toronto. They started as part of the Toronto Granite Curling Club, which is still around today as The Granite Club. At first, they played only exhibition games against teams from places like Ottawa or Montreal, or against local teams from the Caledonian Rink. In the 1890–91 season, they joined the Ontario Hockey Association and played there until 1924. They won the J. Ross Robertson Cup in 1920, 1922, and 1923, and became Canadian champions by winning the 1922 Allan Cup and 1923 Allan Cup.

1924 Winter Olympics

The Toronto Granites, winners of the Allan Cup in 1923, were chosen to represent Canada in ice hockey at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. The team faced new conditions, playing outdoors on natural ice instead of their usual indoor rinks. Despite these changes, the Granites did very well. They won all their games and became Olympic gold medallists after defeating the United States team 6–1.
