Tourist attractions
The most popular places to visit in Buenos Aires are in the historic center, especially in the Montserrat and San Telmo neighborhoods. The city formed around Plaza de Mayo, which was the old administrative center. To the east of the square stands the Casa Rosada, the official home of Argentina's government leader. To the north is the Catedral Metropolitana, a church that has been there since the colonial days. Nearby, you can find important old buildings and government places.
Avenida de Mayo connects the Casa Rosada to the Argentine National Congress. Along this avenue are many important buildings, such as Casa de la Cultura, Palacio Barolo, and Café Tortoni. Below the avenue runs the first metro line in South America, which opened in 1913. The avenue ends at Plaza del Congreso, which has monuments and sculptures including a famous one called "The Thinker."
The Manzana de las Luces area includes San Ignacio church, Colegio Nacional Buenos Aires, and an old city council building. This area also has tunnels and catacombs from colonial times. In San Telmo, Plaza Dorrego holds an antiques fair on Sundays with tango performances. You can also visit the Church of Nuestra Señora de Bethlehem, San Pedro Telmo Parish, and the Antonio Ballvé Penitentiary Museum. The National Historical Museum in Parque Lezama is a few blocks away.
The Recoleta borough has many interesting spots, such as the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Biblioteca Nacional, Centro Cultural Recoleta, and the Cementerio de la Recoleta, where you can see the crypt of Eva Perón and other important Argentine figures.
El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a famous bookstore, is located in Santa Fé Avenue, where Barrio Norte meets Palermo. Nearby are Plaza Italia, the Buenos Aires Zoo, botanical gardens, and Palermo woods with a lake, rose garden, and planetarium.
The Retiro borough features Retiro Railway Terminal and landmarks like Plaza San Martín, with a monument for those who served in the Falklands War, a statue of General San Martín, and the Torre Monumental given by the Anglo-Argentine community. Other sights include the Basilica Santísimo Sacramento and the tall Kavanagh Building.
The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires is in the Palermo neighborhood, along with Bosques de Palermo, the Planetarium, and the Buenos Aires Zoo. The southern part of the city, including Barracas and Parque Patricios, is known for its tango history and growing arts scene. Avenida Corrientes is full of cinemas, theaters, and shops, and home to the San Martín Cultural Center, Paseo La Plaza, and Luna Park coliseum. At the intersection with Avenida 9 de julio stands the Obelisco, a symbol of Buenos Aires. The Mercado de Abasto, a former market now a shopping mall, is also on this avenue.
At the southwest end of the city, you can find the Buenos Aires car racing circuit and Parque de la ciudad amusement park, which has a tall Torre Espacial tower.
