Trematosaurus

Trematosaurus was an extinct type of ancient amphibian that lived a very long time ago. It belonged to a group called trematosaurids, which were part of a larger family known as temnospondyls. Fossils of Trematosaurus have been discovered in places like Germany and Russia. This interesting creature was first given its name by a scientist named Hermann Burmeister in the year 1849. The main species studied is called Trematosaurus brauni.

History of study

Trematosaurus was one of the earliest known amphibians of its kind to be studied by scientists. It was first found in a place called Merkel's Quarry in Germany, near a town called Bernburg an der Saale. People collected fossils there for many years, starting in the 1840s. The name Trematosaurus, meaning "hole lizard" because of a special hole on its head, was first suggested in 1842. But it wasn’t until later that a scientist named Hermann Burmeister officially named the species Trematosaurus brauni.

Scientists have worked hard to learn more about Trematosaurus over time. They looked at fossils kept in museums across Europe. Even today, some details about this ancient amphibian are still being discovered. Other possible species of Trematosaurus have been found in places like Thuringia, Madagascar, South Africa, and Russia, but many of these are now thought to belong to different genera.

Description

T. brauni

Most fossils of Trematosaurus brauni are parts of skulls, ranging from about 11 to 41 centimeters long. We know very little about the rest of its body because only a few pieces of bone from near the chest have been found. This is partly because other large ancient amphibians lived in the same place, but also because these body parts are hard to find.

Scientists use the skull to identify T. brauni. Special features include certain lines on the skull and the wide space between the eyes. There isn’t a main example, or “holotype,” to study, so scientists use other similar fossils for information. Another species, Trematosaurus galae, has some different skull features compared to T. brauni. A third species, Trematosaurus thuringiensis, might not be valid because it only differs by having bigger eye sockets and a narrower skull top.
