Turkmenistan at the Olympics

Turkmenistan has taken part in 8 Summer Olympic Games, starting with the 1996 Summer Olympics. Before that, Turkmen athletes were part of the Soviet Union team, and in 1992, they joined the Unified Team. So far, Turkmenistan has not joined the Winter Olympic Games, making it the only post-Soviet state and the northernmost country in the world to do so.

In 2021, at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Turkmenistan won its first ever medal as an independent country. Polina Guryeva won a silver medal in the women's 59 kg weightlifting event.

Other notable Turkmen athletes have also won Olympic medals, but they were competing for other countries. Marat Nyýazow won medals for the Soviet Union in 1960, and Daniyar İsmayilov now competes for Turkey. In 1992, Altymyrat Orazdurdyýew was part of the Unified Team but was not allowed to compete.

Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, has an Olympic Park. In 2017, it hosted the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games, and in 2018, it hosted the World Weightlifting Championships. The National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan was formed in 1990.
