All-time Olympic Games medal table

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

The official flag of the Russian Olympic Committee used in the 2020 and 2022 Olympics.

This article is about Olympic medals won by countries. You can find lists of medals won by individual athletes at Lists of Olympic medalists and List of multiple Olympic medalists.

The table below shows medals won in all Olympic Games from 1896 to 2026, including the Summer Olympic Games, Winter Olympic Games, and a total of both. These counts do not include the 1906 Intercalated Games because they are no longer recognized as official Games by the International Olympic Committee. The IOC does not create all-time tables itself, so this table was made by adding up results from the IOC database.

Medals are counted for each country using the IOC country code shown in the IOC database. Usually, one code stands for one National Olympic Committee. When a country changes its IOC code or name, the medals are added together. However, not all totals include medals won by athletes from a country when it was part of another NOC. Names in italic are for countries that no longer exist. The totals for NOCs are not combined with those of countries that came before or after them.

List of NOCs with medals (sortable & unranked)

This table shows how many medals each country has won in the Olympic Games. You can sort the table by any column, like the number of gold medals or the total number of medals. The table includes data up to the 2026 Winter Olympics and does not count medals that were taken away for rule breaks.

A total of 162 countries and teams have won at least one Olympic medal. Only France, Great Britain, and Switzerland have been in every Olympic Games since they began.

Variations

Early Olympics

Some countries were given credit for competing in the 1900 Summer Olympics even though the International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not count them as official. This includes one medal that goes to France and is given to Luxembourg.

There are also differences because some events from 1900 and 1904 are not always counted as Olympic events. Some tables also add in the 1906 Intercalated Games.

Alpinism and aeronautics

From 1924 to 1936, the IOC gave out gold medals for climbing mountains and flying airplanes during the Olympic time. In 1924, 1932, and 1936, 25 climbers from six countries got medals for their mountain trips. In 1936, one person from Switzerland got a medal for flying a plane over the Alps first.

Australasia

Australasia was a team made up of athletes from Australia and New Zealand that competed together in the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. After World War I, the two countries competed separately.

British West Indies

The British West Indies was a group of islands in the Caribbean that joined together for a short time from 1958 to 1962. Athletes from this group competed in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy under the name British West Indies. They only competed once, and then the islands went back to competing on their own.

Czechoslovakia

Czechoslovakia first joined the Olympics in after competing as Bohemia from 1900 to 1912. They missed the 1984 Games because of a boycott. After Czechoslovakia split in 1993, the Czech Republic and Slovakia started competing separately in 1994.

Germany

Germany has competed under many different names, sometimes as two teams at once. Some parts of Germany competed on their own in 1952 but did not win any medals. Germany was not allowed to compete in 1920, 1924, and 1948.

Kuwait

In 2016, athletes from Kuwait competed as Independent Olympic Athletes because their Olympic committee was not allowed to take part. They still won medals under the Olympic flag.

Netherlands Antilles

The Netherlands Antilles was a group of islands that competed from 1952 until 2008. After it broke apart in 2010, the islands competed separately or as independent athletes.

China

The Republic of China, now known as Taiwan, first competed in 1932 as China. After 1949, only athletes from Taiwan competed for them. They have had some changes in how they were named during different Olympics.

Russian Federation and the Soviet Union

The Russian Federation and the Soviet Union are often grouped together in some tables, even though many countries that are now separate also helped earn medals for the Soviet Union.

Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia started competing in 1920. Over time, it changed from the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and finally to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. After breaking apart, the countries competed separately starting in the 1990s. Kosovo joined in 2016.

Others

Other teams have also had athletes compete as independents. For example, East Timor had athletes compete this way in 2000, and South Sudan had one in 2012.
