Vintry

Vintry is one of the 25 wards of the City of London. It is an important area that includes the City end of the Southwark Bridge and the hall of the Worshipful Company of Vintners, which is the City livery company for people who work with wine.

The shape of Vintry is defined by several streets and the River Thames. It is bordered by Cannon Street to the north, College Hill and Cousin Lane to the east, the river to the south, and an unusual line along Little Trinity Lane, Lambeth Hill, and Distaff Lane to the west.

One famous landmark in Vintry is the church St James Garlickhythe, designed by Christopher Wren. It is close to Mansion House tube station. In old times, French wine and garlic were brought to a place nearby called Garlickhythe. Because of this, the church became part of the path for English travelers going to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, a place remembered for honoring St James the Great.

Vintry was also home to Whittington's Longhouse, a public toilet that could hold 128 people. It was given to the city by Dick Whittington, a well-known figure in London history.

Politics

Vintry is one of 25 areas in the City of London. Each area chooses a leader called an alderman for a group called the Court of Aldermen. People also pick representatives, similar to councillors, for another group called the Court of Common Council.

Only special members known as freemen of the City can run to be chosen for these important jobs.

Former churches

John Stow’s book A Survay of London mentions four old churches that were once in the Vintry ward. These churches were S. Michael Paternoſter in the Royall, S. Thomas Apoſtles, S. Martin in the Vintrie, and S. Iames at Garlicke Hith.
