The 1950 United States Census
The 1950 United States census was a big count of everyone living in the United States. It happened in 1950, and it found that 151,325,798 people lived in the country. This was a lot more people than ten years before, in 1940.
This census was special because it was the first time that more than one state had over 10 million people. It was also the first time that every state and territory had more than 100,000 people. All of the 100 biggest cities had populations bigger than 100,000 too.
The Census Bureau did this big count. They asked everyone questions about their address, name, age, and birthplace. They also asked about jobs and if people worked on a farm.
In 2022, the National Archives and Records Administration made the full census records available to everyone. This happened because of a rule that says census records can be shared with the public after 72 years. This means the 1950 census is the most recent one that everyone can see freely.
Big Cities in 1950
The census showed the biggest cities in the United States. New York was the biggest city, with almost 8 million people. Chicago was next, with about 3.6 million people. Other big cities were Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Detroit.
Here are the top 10 biggest cities from the 1950 census:
- New York - 7,891,957 people
- Chicago - 3,620,962 people
- Philadelphia - 2,071,605 people
- Los Angeles - 1,970,358 people
- Detroit - 1,849,568 people
- Baltimore - 949,708 people
- Cleveland - 914,808 people
- St. Louis - 856,796 people
- Washington - 802,178 people
- Boston - 801,444 people
These cities were important centers of life in the United States in 1950. They had many people, jobs, and places to live. The census helps us learn about how the country was growing and changing at that time.
