1980 Summer Olympics

The 1980 Summer Olympics, also called Moscow 1980, were fun games where athletes from many places came together to compete. They happened in Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union, from July 19 to August 3, 1980.

Many countries decided not to join these games because of some difficult times between countries. Instead, some of these countries had their own events.

Even so, athletes from many nations still came to Moscow. The Soviet Union and East Germany were very successful, winning lots of medals.

Host City

Two cities wanted to host the games: Moscow and Los Angeles. Leaders chose Moscow in 1974. Later, Los Angeles hosted the Olympics in 1984.

Mascot

The games had a cute bear mascot named Misha. Misha was shown in many places during the Olympics.

Sports and Events

There were many sports to watch, like swimming, gymnastics, and basketball. Athletes from 80 countries took part, and some countries joined the Olympics for the very first time, such as Angola, Botswana, and Cyprus.

Fun Facts

  • The games had 203 events, more than any Olympics before.
  • Special coins were made to remember the games.

The 1980 Summer Olympics will always be remembered for bringing together athletes from around the world, even during a time when many countries were not getting along.
