Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He served from 1861 until he passed away in 1865. He is remembered for helping to keep the country united and for working to end a very wrong practice called slavery.

Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky on February 12, 1809. His family moved to Indiana when he was a young boy. There, he grew up on a farm and loved to read and learn new things. Later, he moved to Illinois and became a lawyer. He married Mary Todd, and they had four sons, but only their oldest, Robert Todd Lincoln, lived to grow up.

In 1860, Lincoln was elected president. During his time as president, he made very important decisions to help the country. One of these was the Emancipation Proclamation, which helped free people who were slaves in the Southern states. He also gave a famous speech called the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln worked hard to change the rules of the country to end slavery forever. This change is called the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

People remember Lincoln as a hero for keeping the country united and for his work to end slavery. You can see his face on the American penny and the five-dollar bill. There are also many memorials for him, such as the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and his carved face on Mount Rushmore.
