The Adams–Onís Treaty

The Adams–Onís Treaty was a very important agreement between Spain and the United States. It was signed in 1819 by two leaders named John Quincy Adams and Luis de Onís. This treaty helped both countries decide where their lands were.

One big part of the treaty was that Spain gave Florida to the United States. In return, the United States said it would not claim parts of Texas that belonged to Spain. This treaty helped make the first big border line across the country.

The treaty was signed in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. Even though it was signed in 1819, it only became official in 1821. This treaty helped the United States grow bigger and helped set important borders for many years.
