Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a very important person in Austria-Hungary. He was born on December 18, 1863, in Graz, a pretty city in the Austrian Empire. His full name was Franz Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria.
Franz Ferdinand was the eldest son of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria. He was also the nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. This meant he was next in line to become the ruler of Austria-Hungary.
When he was young, Franz Ferdinand traveled all around the world. He visited many exciting places like India, Australia, and many islands in the Pacific Ocean. He also sailed to the United States and saw the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
Franz Ferdinand liked to hunt animals and kept records of all the animals he hunted. He also collected many valuable items and kept them in a special castle in Konopiště. He was very interested in the military and joined the Austro-Hungarian Army when he was young. He became a leader in the army and helped with important plans.
In 1900, Franz Ferdinand married Countess Sophie Chotek. They had three children: Princess Sophie of Hohenberg, Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg, and Prince Ernst of Hohenberg. Their marriage was special because Sophie was not from a royal family, but the emperor allowed them to marry.
People remember Franz Ferdinand because something very sad happened to him and his wife. They were visiting Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, when a young man hurt them badly. This sad event helped cause a difficult time between countries, and soon after, World War I began.
Today, there is a memorial for Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo to remember him.
