World War I
World War I, also called The Great War, was a very big fight that happened a long time ago. It started on July 28, 1914, and ended on November 11, 1918. Many countries from all around the world were part of it. The two main groups were the Allies and the Central Powers.
The war began after a sad event in Sarajevo, a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. An important person named Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was visiting, and something very sad happened. Because of this, countries that had special agreements started to get involved. Soon, many places like Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia were fighting.
People remember World War I because it changed the world in many ways. New kinds of machines like tanks and airplanes were used for the first time. After the war ended, some old countries like the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary were no longer around. New countries such as Poland, Finland, and the Baltic states were created.
The war also led to the creation of the League of Nations, an organization that wanted to help keep peace between countries. Even though it had good ideas, it faced many challenges. Later, these challenges helped lead to another big war called World War II.
Today, we remember the soldiers and people who lived through this difficult time. Many places have special memorials to honor them. Learning about World War I helps us understand why it is important to work together and keep peace in the world.
