Athletics at the Summer Olympics is a fun and exciting part of the games. It has been a part of every Summer Olympics since the modern games began in 1896. The events come from the ancient Greek Olympics and have grown to include many races and competitions.

Today, athletics includes track and field events, road running, and race walking. These events test the speed, strength, and endurance of athletes from all over the world. Athletics is one of the most exciting parts of the Olympic Games because of the many different ways athletes can show their skills.

In the early Olympics, there was also cross country running, but it was stopped after the 1924 Summer Olympics. Athletics events have changed over time. For example, tug of war was part of athletics from 1900 to 1920, but it is now a separate sport. Women began competing in athletics at the 1928 Summer Olympics.

New events continue to be added. A mixed event, the 4 Γ— 400 metres relay, first appeared at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Paris 2024 had another mixed event: the Marathon Race Walking Mixed Relay. There are many exciting events to watch in athletics at the Olympics!
