What is a Birth Defect?
A birth defect is something a baby is born with that can change how the body looks or works. These changes can be small, like an extra finger, or bigger, like a split in the roof of the mouth called a cleft palate. Birth defects can affect the heart, brain, or stomach, and they can sometimes be found right away or later with special tests.
Why Do Birth Defects Happen?
Birth defects can happen because of many reasons. Sometimes, genes or changes in chromosomes play a part. Other times, things like medicines, chemicals, or sicknesses during pregnancy can be involved. For example, not getting enough folic acid, a special vitamin, can lead to problems with the spine or brain. Doctors work hard to understand all the different reasons so they can help families.
How Are Birth Defects Treated?
If a baby has a birth defect, doctors have many ways to help. They might use therapy, medicine, or even special machines and tools called assistive technology. Some birth defects, like congenital heart disease, need careful care to keep the child healthy and happy. With the right help, many children with birth defects grow up strong and well.
Fun Facts
Did you know that some birth defects happen more often in boys than girls? For example, pyloric stenosis is much more common in boys. On the other hand, congenital hip dislocation happens more often in girls. Doctors study these differences to learn more about how to help every child.
