Captains Courageous
"Captains Courageous" is a story written by Rudyard Kipling in 1897. It is about a boy named Harvey Cheyne Jr. who lives in California. Harvey’s father is a very rich railroad magnate.
One day, Harvey falls into the ocean from a big steamship. A fishing boat from the Grand Banks of Newfoundland saves him. The kind fishermen make Harvey work with them so he can learn about life. This teaches Harvey about hard work and respect.
The story was first shared in a magazine called McClure's before becoming a book. Even Teddy Roosevelt, who later became the president of the United States, liked this book. It is special because it is the only story by Kipling that takes place in North America.
When Harvey returns home to Boston, Massachusetts, his parents are happy to see how much he has grown. They even bring one of the fishermen to work on their ships!
