Welcome to California!

California is a big and beautiful state in the Western United States. It sits right along the Pacific Coast and touches Oregon up north, Nevada and Arizona to the east, and even has a friendly neighbor to the south called Baja California in Mexico.

A Place Full of People and Places

California is the most populous state in the United States, with lots of people living in many different kinds of places. You can find big cities like Los Angeles and San Diego, sunny beaches, tall mountains, and even deserts! The state has many different landscapes, making it a fun place to explore.

A Mix of Cultures

Long ago, California was home to many Native American groups, each with their own languages and traditions. Over time, people from many other places came to live there, too. Today, California is known for its rich and diverse culture, with influences from many countries around the world.

Famous Cities and Sights

Los Angeles is one of the most famous cities in the world, known for its movies, music, and sunny weather. San Francisco is another well-known city, famous for its hills, bridges, and unique architecture. Sacramento, the state’s capital, is where important decisions for California are made.

Nature’s Wonders

California has some amazing natural places. The Sierra Nevada mountains are home to Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States. Death Valley is one of the hottest and driest places on Earth. The state also has beautiful coastal areas, lush forests, and even deserts to explore.

Fun and Games

California loves sports! The state has many professional teams, including baseball, basketball, football, and hockey. Popular sports like surfing and skateboarding were born here. People also enjoy activities like golf, tennis, and motorsports.

Learning and Growing

California has many schools and universities. Some of the most famous include the University of California, with its oldest campus at UC Berkeley, and Stanford University. The state works hard to provide good education for all its students.

A Strong Economy

California has a very strong economy. It is home to many big companies, especially in technology, entertainment, and agriculture. Places like Silicon Valley are known worldwide for their innovation. The state also grows lots of food, including milk, almonds, and grapes.

Government in Action

The capital of California is Sacramento. The state has a government with three main parts: the executive branch, led by the governor; the legislative branch, which makes laws; and the judicial branch, which makes sure laws are followed fairly. California also lets people vote on important issues directly through propositions.

California is a wonderful place with much to see and do. Whether you’re interested in nature, cities, sports, or learning, there’s something for everyone in this amazing state!
