The Carpathian Mountains
The Carpathian Mountains, or the Carpathians, are a big, beautiful mountain range in Central Europe and Southeast Europe. They stretch for about 1,500 kilometers, making them one of the longest mountain ranges in Europe. The highest peaks are in the Tatra Mountains, where some mountains rise higher than 2,600 meters!
These mountains run through many countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, and Serbia. The Carpathians are full of wild animals, like brown bears, wolves, and lynxes. Romania, in particular, has many of these animals living freely.
The Carpathians also have many different plants. Over one-third of all plant species in Europe can be found here! There are also many natural springs and waters. Romania has some of the largest old-growth forests left in Europe, mostly in the Carpathians. These forests are special but need care to stay safe from harm.
The Carpathians have many names depending on the language and place. In Czech, Polish, and Slovak, they are called Karpaty. In Ukrainian, they are known as Карпати, and in Romanian, they are called Carpați. Long ago, people called the eastern part the "Sarmatian Mountains" and the western part "Carpates." The exact origin of the name "Carpates" is still a mystery!
The Carpathians are home to many beautiful places and animals. In the lower areas, you can find forests with trees like oak and beech. Higher up, the trees change to spruce, and at the highest heights, there are no trees—just grasses and wildflowers. The mountains are also home to wildlife, including bears, wolves, lynxes, wildcats, special goats called chamois, bison, and golden eagles. These animals live in the forests and meadows of the Carpathians, making it a wonderful place to explore nature.
