Early Life and Work

Christian Friedrich Schönbein was a scientist from Germany and Switzerland. He was born in a small town called Metzingen in the Duchy of Württemberg. When he was just a teenager, he began learning about chemicals and later studied at the University of Basel, where he became a teacher.

Important Discoveries

Schönbein made some amazing discoveries! In 1838, he invented the first fuel cell, a special machine that makes electricity without burning anything. He also found a new kind of air called ozone, which has a special smell and helps protect our planet. Another of his discoveries was guncotton, a material that burns very quickly.

Why We Remember Him

Schönbein’s work helped scientists understand our world better. He started the study of geochemistry, which looks at chemicals in rocks and soil. Today, a special star-shaped rock in space is named after him to remember his great work.
