Cologne is a big and exciting city in Germany. It is one of the largest cities in the country and has a very long and interesting history. People from all over the world visit Cologne to see its beautiful sights and enjoy its fun traditions.

Famous Sights

One of the most famous places in Cologne is the Cologne Cathedral. This huge and beautiful church took more than 600 years to build! It is a special place and many people visit it every year. The cathedral is so important that it was named a World Heritage Site in 1996.

Cologne also has many old churches, like twelve Romanesque churches, and beautiful old houses. There are three old city gates still standing today! Visitors can shop on busy streets like Hohe Straße and Schildergasse. They can cross the Rhine River on bridges, including the famous iron Hohenzollern Bridge.

Fun Traditions and Food

Cologne is known for its fun traditions, especially the Cologne carnival. This is a big street festival where people dress up in costumes and celebrate. It starts on November 11th at 11 minutes past 11 a.m. and continues until Ash Wednesday. The main celebration happens on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, called Weiberfastnacht.

The city is also famous for its special beer called Kölsch. It is a tasty, light beer that people enjoy in local places called Brauhäuser. Cologne has delicious food too, like Rheinischer Sauerbraten (a special pot roast) and Himmel un Ääd (mashed potatoes and apple sauce). There are also yummy snacks and cakes to try!

Music and Museums

Cologne loves music and has many places to enjoy it. The city has famous orchestras like the Gürzenich Orchestra and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne. There are also many music festivals and fairs held in the city.

The city has many museums too! You can visit the Roman-Germanic Museum to see old art and buildings, and the Museum Ludwig for modern art, including works by Picasso. There is also the Farina Fragrance Museum, where you can learn about the history of Eau de Cologne, a special perfume that has been made in Cologne since 1709.

Getting Around

Cologne has many ways to get around. The city has big roads, including the Bundesautobahn 555. There are also many trains, with fast ICE trains going to cities like Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris. The city has a busy airport called Cologne Bonn Airport. There are buses and a special light rail system called the Cologne Stadtbahn that helps people travel around the city and nearby places.

Cologne is a wonderful city with lots to see and do. Whether you are interested in history, food, music, or just having fun, you will find something exciting in Cologne!
