Ancient Colonus

Colonus, also called Kolonos, was a special place in ancient Attica. It was close to the city, near the river Cephissus and Plato's Academy. Two small hills gave the area its name.

Famous Birthplace

The famous poet Sophocles was born in Colonus. One of his best plays, Oedipus at Colonus, happens in this place. People loved to visit Colonus because it was full of sacred spots.

Sacred Spots

Colonus was a holy place for worship. The god Poseidon watched over it. There were temples and altars for many gods and heroes like Demeter, Zeus, Prometheus, Theseus, and Adrastus. Today, Colonus is near a place called Agia Eleousa in the neighborhood of Kolonos.
