Welcome to Cork City

Cork is a lovely city in Ireland. It is the second biggest city in the country and the main city of County Cork. Cork sits in the middle of the province of Munster.

A City on the River

The heart of Cork is an island in the River Lee. The river flows around the city, leading to beautiful quays and docks. These stretch out to Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the whole world!

A Long and Interesting History

Cork started a long time ago in the 6th century. It began as a quiet place for monks. Later, around the year 915, Viking people arrived and helped make the city bigger. Today, you can still see some old parts of the town near South and North Main streets.

Fun Things to See and Do

Cork has many interesting places to visit. One of the most famous spots is the church tower of St Anne in Shandon. It has red sandstone on some sides and white limestone on others, with a weather vane shaped like a salmon on top.

You can also explore the English Market, which is full of fresh foods like fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables. It’s a great place to try local treats!

Sports and Games

People in Cork love sports! Gaelic football and hurling are very popular. Cork teams have won many big competitions. There are also clubs for rugby, football, rowing, and even cricket. The Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven is the oldest yacht club in the world—that’s pretty cool!

A Friendly City

Cork is a friendly place with lots of people from different countries. It’s a city full of history, culture, and fun things to do. Whether you’re interested in old buildings, markets, or sports, Cork has something for everyone!
