Welcome to Coyoacán

Coyoacán is a special part of Mexico City. It used to be a small village, but now it is a busy neighborhood with lots of history. The name Coyoacán comes from an old language called Nahuatl and means "place of those who own coyotes".

Old Village Charm

The heart of Coyoacán is called Villa Coyoacán. This area has old, narrow streets and pretty squares. Many buildings here are very old, some from hundreds of years ago. People love to visit here on weekends. You can find cafes, museums, and shops selling tasty treats like ice cream and esquites. Street performers, like musicians and clowns, make the streets fun and lively.

Beautiful Squares

Two big squares are the center of Villa Coyoacán: Jardin del Centenario and Plaza Hidalgo. In Plaza Hidalgo, you can see a special kiosk with colorful glass and a tall bronze eagle on top. There is also a statue of a priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who helped Mexico become free.

Important Buildings

One important building is the Casa Municipal, also called La Casa de Cortés. It has been used for government work since the 1700s. Nearby is the Parish of San Juan Bautista, a very old church built between 1520 and 1552. Inside, you can see beautiful paintings and old wooden work made by skilled artists.

Fun Places to Visit

Coyoacán has many places to explore. The Museo Nacional de Culturas Populares shows fun exhibits about popular culture, like lucha libre wrestling. You can also visit the Frida Kahlo Museum, called “La Casa Azul,” where Frida Kahlo was born and lived. It has her art and personal things on display.

Schools and Learning

Coyoacán has many schools for children. There are elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Some of the schools include Reino de Jordania, Tecayehuatzin, and Professor Jesús Silva Herzog for elementary. For middle school, you can find Diurna Número 35 General Vicente Guerrero and Diurna Número 130 Guadalupe Ceniceros de Zavaleta. High schools include Centro de Estudios Tecnológicos Industrial y de Servicios 2 and Colegio de Bachilleres 4. There is also an international school called Lycée Franco-Mexicain.

Coyoacán is a wonderful place with lots of history, beautiful buildings, and fun things to do. Whether you are walking through old streets or visiting museums, there is always something interesting to see and learn!
