Who Was Diocletian?
Diocletian was a leader of the Roman Empire. He ruled from 284 until he stepped down in 305. He was born into a family of low status in the Roman province of Dalmatia.
His Big Changes
Diocletian helped bring stability to the Roman Empire during a tricky time called the Crisis of the Third Century. He split the empire into two parts, ruling the Eastern Empire while his friend Maximian ruled the West. Together with two junior emperors, Galerius and Constantius, they formed a system called the Tetrarchy to govern better.
A Quiet Life After Ruling
After stepping down, Diocletian went back to his home in Dalmatia. He lived in a big palace near the town of Salona, which is now part of the city of Split in Croatia. He enjoyed tending to his gardens there.
Why We Remember Him
Diocletian is remembered for making the Roman Empire stronger. He organized the government, built stronger borders, and made new rules for taxes. His palace in Split is still standing today and is a famous place to visit.
